Prolific author and short story writer Della Galton will be our Monday evening speaker

We are delighted to have Della Galton as our Monday evening speaker. She has been a regular – and highly popular – course leader at Swanwick over the years.

When we asked Della how she felt about coming to the School as a guest speaker, she replied: “I am absolutely thrilled to bits and consider it one of the highlights of my writing career. When I first came to Swanwick way back in the mists of time, I walked around feeling a little scared but very honoured to be a part of such a famous school. I'd read about it for years but hadn't managed to book as it was usually sold out by January. There were famous writers everywhere – Mary Wibberley, Gordon Wells, Jean Saunders, Stella Whitelaw, Chris McCallum (to name just a few) – people whose books about writing I had read and loved but never had the privilege to meet. You never knew who you were going to sit next to at breakfast. It was magical, inspiring, wonderful.”
We are very much looking forward to welcoming Della to Swanwick!

Della Galton is a novelist, short story writer and journalist, and her new book The Morning After The Life Before was published earlier this month. Della says, “The book is about SJ, who is a recovering alcoholic, and her struggle to cope with the mounting problems in her life without returning to her old friend, alcohol. Think Bridget Jones with booze – actually, think Bridget Jones with more booze!

“It’s the sequel to my novel, Ice and a Slice and I wrote it because I was touched beyond words by the emails I received from people who  had their own drink problem and said it had changed their lives. It’s a subject very close to my heart. My family has alcoholism running through it and I wanted to portray if I could the other side of the coin. And I wanted to do it with humour and with love.”

As a change from our normal Q&A with writers, agents and editors, we’re celebrating the opening of bookings for Swanwick 2015, with a special “Swanwick Magic” #AskSwanwick chat.

We’ll be talking to previous attendees (Swanwickers, as we colloquially call them) about their fondest memories, tricks of the trade they’ve learnt at the Summer School, successes that have come from the school and best tips for surviving the week. We’ll also be answering questions from Swanwick ‘virgins’, sharing what you might get from attending the world’s longest running residential conference for writers.

If you’re a writer in the UK, Europe or beyond, come join our #AskSwanwick Twitter chat on Tuesday 10 March, 8pm (UK Time) and find out what makes Swanwick magic for writers!

Just search for the hashtag #AskSwanwick on Tuesday 10 March at 8pm (UK Time) – making sure you follow 'all' not just 'top' search results. To ask a question, tweet using the #AskSwanwick hashtag followed by your question. You can find an easy guide on how to follow and tweet-etiquette here.

Selected highlights of each session are available on the Swanwick website a few weeks after each chat – but nothing beats following it in person at the time and asking questions!

Best wishes,

The 2015 #AskSwanwick season started on 3 February with a little more action than anticipated. Robin de Jongh, our ebook marketing expert, was unable to attend because of an emergency meeting. But being the pro that he is, he provided a more than adequate replacement. Candace Gillhoolley (@Candace35), marketing manager of Manning Publications, tuned in from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and made the first chat of the year our first imntercontinental one.

Before joining Manning Publications where she handles ebook as well as paperback marketing, Candace has worked for such prestigious companies as Readers Digest, Dorling Kindersley and Warner Trade Publishing, to name but a few. You can find out more about her here.

Fans of our very own Angela Churm, regular tutor at Swanwick and one of last year's specialist course leaders, will have spotted her name as the writer of Friday's episode of Doctors on BBC1.

Entitled 'Happy Ever After', the episode bears all the hallmarks of Angela's warm, humorous (and often quirky) storylines.

If you missed it, there's still time to see it on BBC iPlayer for Friday 6th February, broadcast at 1.45pm.
