“I like to make sure my courses involve lots of interaction and doing. I think people learn best actively. Although I'll be focusing on writing for children (from 0 to 18/19), a lot of writing techniques and skills are transferable, so most writers will learn something on the course, even if they don't end up specialising in writing for children. Having said that, it's an amazing audience to write for - one of the hardest and most rewarding! A lot of Swanwick regulars have been on my courses before so I like to keep my sessions fresh and give them something new too.”
And what does Swanwick mean to you?
“When I first attended the Summer School, I didn't know what to expect, and nothing prepared me for the warmth and encouragement that comes from it. After a few years drifting, hoping my writing was going to lead somewhere, the advice I received at Swanwick jump-started real change for me. Not only has it helped my career to grow, I've made some valuable life-long friends.”
