How to Pitch to Swanwick

Submissions Window

The submissions window for the 2022 school is now closed

The window for submissions for 2023 will open after the end of the 2022 school.  The school is always interested to hear from people with the right skills who would like to run courses or act as an evening speaker. If you wish to be considered then here is the procedure.

What to Pitch

Evening Speakers
The school has had many well known speakers over the years and is interested to hear from accomplished speakers, able to engage, inform as well as entertain an audience. If you would like to be considered, or you have a recommendation/contact with someone you believe suitable, then please email: chairman@swanwickwritersschool.org.uk and provide more details.
Four Part Courses
There are five Four Part (Specialist) courses during the week. Successful courses have wide appeal and are generally in one of the main genres such as Novels, Screenwriting, YA Fiction etc.  We would not consider any subject that we covered the previous year as a four part course – other than novel writing or poetry.  The four part courses represent around 30% of the total programme and therefore demonstrable or evidenced tutor credibility/experience is also an important consideration.  If you are submitting a Four Part course, we would like to see a CV of your teaching experience/credentials.

Two Part Courses
There are between 16 and 20 two part (Short) courses over the week.  These represent over 50% of the learning programme and therefore they must also have sufficient appeal (i.e. are they likely to attract around 50 delegates but we often look for contemporary subjects, new areas and modern issues facing writers.  We are also keen on subjects for the younger writer market and more progressive/topical subjects.  For example, for 2019 we chose subjects such as Writing for Mental Health and Gender Awareness.  Short courses that offer opportunities for practical work are very popular.

Workshops
We typically have around 10-12 one hour sessions and this is an ideal opportunity for tutors new to Swanwick to get to know us.  Workshops are often interactive and offer opportunities for practical work and there is a vast range of subjects that we would consider, provided that we think they will attract a big enough audience.

Note: All Course and Workshop pitches should be sent by email to: vicechair@swanwickwritersschool.org.uk (see below).

How to Pitch a Course for 2023

1.      Pitch your course in a WORD document stating the title of your course.

2.      Identify whether your course is a 4 part, (specialist course) 2 part (short course) or a one hour session.  If you have not submitted to the school before then look through the programme web pages to see examples from the current year.

3.      Give an outline of your course and then explain what each session will cover. Tell us why people should attend your course. What will they learn? What are the benefits of attending it? Will there be exercises within the sessions? Opportunities for participants to share their work? The more detail you provide then the better the chance of being selected.

4.      Tell us about yourself in a short bio. Give details about your experience and any other information relevant to delivering your course. If you have a website then please include a link to it.

5.      Many tutors offer one to one sessions with delegates, to review a sample of their work and provide constructive feedback. These help raise school funds but a small fee is provided to tutors. If your course is selected then further details will be provided but you may tell us on your application if you are happy to consider doing these.

Once complete, send your document as an email attachment to: vicechair@swanwickwritersschool.org.uk

Once submissions have closed they will be reviewed and you will be advised whether or not you have been successful before 1st January 2023.
